Trouble is brewing in the kingdom of Thornwood. Your father has mysteriously vanished along with Princess Jessa. Meanwhile, the evil Dark Sol has appeared with his fiendish forces to threaten the land. Like any good hero, you are off to rescue your father and the princess, but first you will have to track down the Arms of Light, which will help you vanquish Dark Sol and his army. Expect to face all sorts of horrible monsters as you navigate the many 3D dungeons. Do not worry too much, though, as you will have your faithful friends Milo and Pyra fighting alongside you. Together you can pass the test of the Ancients and become shining knights.

- Shining Force is a prequel to this title. The Dark Sol from this game is the son of the similarly named villain in Shining Force.
- One unique feature of the Shining series is that many of the games feature completely different gameplay styles.
